What are Essential Oils?

Essential oils are potent volatile “oils” extracted from the seeds, bark, flowers, leaves, needles, resin, and roots of plants. The volatile "oils" of the plant are captured during a distillation, coldpressing, or other extraction process. Because essential oils are so concentrated and highly fragrant, essential oils are used by the drop. It is best to use very high quality essential oils to receive the full range of beneficial actions. 100% pure natural essential oils should not be confused with “fragrance oils” which are synthetic compounds created in a lab to smell like real flowers.

How To Use the Essential Oils?

There are many ways to use essential oils. They should be diluted in water, oil, lotion or used undiluted in a diffuser. Here are a few suggestions:

• Smell: Smell the oils directly from the bottle to clear or re-program your mind, shift your perspective, balance your energy. Smell is the safest way to enjoy aromatherapy.

• Smell: Place one drop neat (undiluted) on your palm. Rub palms together and cup under nose. Smell deeply. Exhale over your left shoulder. You can also place palms over your heart and belly to balance emotions and activate immunity.

• Smell: Place drops on pillow, tissue, etc.

• Diffuser (candle): Place several drops of essential oil in the little water cup. To make your own “diffuser” add essential oils to a bowl of hot water. Diffusers clear, balance, and disinfect a room as you receive healing benefits.

• Electric Diffuser: Add 100% essential oils to diffuser. Allow scent to fill room.

• Atomizing Mister (essential oils in water or a hydrosol): Spray around your face, your head, your aura (energy field surrounding your body), your room or office, bed, pillows, or car. Misting is excellent for clearing space or the aura of negative energy. Avoid eyes and sensitive skin.

• Massage: Dilute essential oils in vegetable oil or lotion (1-3% essential oil) and apply directly to your skin. Approximately 10-15 drops of essential oil per oz. of vegetable oil. Great for muscles, tendons, lymph, and skin. Do not use baby oil or Vaseline as they are petroleum products.

• Perfume: Use essential oils diluted with jojoba and wear like a perfume.

• Chakra annoiting oil: Apply essential oils diluted with jojoba to chakras or on hands used for balancing chakras. Energy healing is very effective using essential oils. For example, Orange can repair auric field tears.

• Bath: Add 1-9 drops essential oil to a bath. Mix well. Careful of citrus oils including Bergamot and other oils like Cinnamon and Clove as they may irritate or burn sensitive skin. Do a patch test (a small amount of oil on inner arm to check for irritation) or start with less oil.

• Steam: Add 3-6 drops of essential oil to very hot water. Cover head and pot with towel. Close eyes and inhale deeply. Great as decongesting steam during illness or allergy season.

Essential oils have the power to shift you instantly into a more relaxed, balanced, energized, or euphoric state of being by creating harmony within the body and mind. Scent connects directly with the limbic system in the brain influencing your emotions, memories, creativity, intuition, immunity, hormone balancing, sex drive, and sleep patterns.

Scent is a Bridge to Spirit
Scent can also expand your awareness beyond the physical. It evokes powerful feelings but cannot be seen. It acts as a bridge to your Spirit. The right scent helps you create positive thoughts and feelings about yourself and opens you to your soul nature, and the Divine.

Building Immunity, Wound Healing, Nervous System Strengthening
Essential oils also work on the physical level as a wonderful nervous system tonic, balancer, anti-inflammatory, sedative, anti-septic, and anti-viral to name a few of their healing properties. The tiny molecules of essential oil penetrate through the lungs or skin into the blood stream to travel to your body’s systems where they can balance and strengthen. Essential oils contain numerous chemical constituents for healing and regenerating skin cells, naturally. French physicians commonly use essential oils for treating viral and bacterial infections and as a superior hormone balancer for women. Also, essential oils act as powerful antidotes to emotional, mental, and physical stress.

Subtle Energy Healing
Essential oils are also wonderful balancers for your chakra system and aura (subtle energy system) where emotional, mental, spiritual patterns can be accessed and healed. Essential oils bring the specific frequencies of energy you need to repair and create a healthy flow of energy. Misters are an excellent way to receive the balancing, healing frequencies of the essential oils subtly. You can use them over your aura, in your space or with your clients or patients. Oils can also be diffused in a room, added to the bath, or applied directly on or near the chakras.

Essential Oils Safety
Most essential oils are very safe if used with common sense. It is best to always dilute essential oils in water, oil, or lotion. Use only high quality oils. Avoid mucous membranes and contact with eyes. Keep out of reach of children. Smelling oils is the safest way to use oils. If using essential oils on the skin, do a patch test or research their safety. Essential oils should never be taken orally unless under the supervision of a highly trained practitioner. And if you have health considerations, consult your health care provider for safety information. A few essential oils are not safe to use or may have certain contra-indications.
